After nearly 20 years of service in the Ames dining hall & kitchen, Tony Marino is heading into retirement this weekend. As Phil Lovejoy, Facilities Manager, noted in an appreciation speech, Tony is one of only 3 head cooks the School Program has had since it’s inception (in 1989). Tony began at Wediko in December 1995. He’s worked at Wediko longer than any other company in his career.
Tony’s work ethic brought him in during snowstorms to call in milk orders, to ensure there was coverage for every meal and to make sure the kitchen kept running – no matter what was going on around him. He made our birthday cakes, graduation brunches, DEAR snacks, special event snacks, staff appreciation cookies, Basketball Awards Dinners and holiday feasts…
Among other things, Tony deserves credit for helping to design and start the Black Pond Pizzeria to develop work opportunities for older students.
We have celebrated his retirement by calling back some of our alumni students to send well wishes, and – by Tony’s request- honoring his last Black Pond Pizzeria with a magic show performed by a graduating senior. We wish him the best of luck as he heads to enjoy a summer of camping and relaxation with his family.
Our hats are off to you, Tony! Thank you for your dedication and commitment to children – and for all of the laughs along the way!
