TIMBo (Trauma-Informed Mind-Body or Transformational Intervention for Mind and Body) is a mindfulness-oriented group for women who have experienced trauma and other stressors. As part of Wediko’s approach to trauma-informed care, this curriculum group combines discussion, journaling, yoga, and meditation to help women heal from past traumas and manage current stress.
I became a Certified Facilitator for TIMBo in 2013. More recently, we welcomed Keyona Aviles, school-based clinician and certified yoga teacher, to the TIMBo team. Over the years, Wediko has provided TIMBo groups to women in public housing, caregivers of special needs students, and moms whose children are in a therapeutic residential treatment program. We asked what was working for women in the program and what could be improved. The data spoke, and we listened to it.
For example, data indicated that participants found the TIMBo group sessions helpful in managing stress levels and decreasing symptoms of anxiety. We also noticed that the women we serve, who have complicated lives and a history of complex trauma, found it difficult to attend 16 sessions. Further, these women sang the praises of TIMBo and told us that they wished their children could experience the same level and style of healing.
Wediko pilots new TIMBo groups
Beginning with our first class yesterday, in collaboration with yogaHOPE, Wediko is piloting two new TIMBo groups: an 8-session group for adults and, simultaneously, an 8-session TIMBo for Teens.
TIMBo for Teens will be structured the same as the adult group, with emphasis on developmentally-appropriate content during the discussion. TIMBo will be the second in our series of group interventions for families held for our “Tuesday Family Night @ Wediko” programming.
In addition, there will be a group for children led by our Living with Loss grief counseling clinicians. Wediko will supply a light dinner as well as help with transportation, if needed.
Constantly evolving and changing, Wediko’s TIMBo strives to provide healing and recovery to women and mothers who so desperately need it. I am passionate about the mission of this group, invested in the population we serve, and proud of the results we provide.
