School-Based Services

  • 28 years of partnership between Boston Public Schools and Wediko’s Boston School-Based Program
  • In 2007-2008:
    • 1,754 students received Wediko clinical services
    • 289 families received family therapy
    • 77 families attended one or more Parent Support Groups 
    • 23,641 hours of direct clinical services provided
    • 600 students participated in Side by Side social skills groups
  • 8 colleges & universities have placed student interns at Wediko over the past 5 years
  • 50 clinicians, including social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists, provide services each week
  • 19 schools receive Wediko clinical services each week in 2008-2009
  • 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, clinicians are available to talk to clients in crisis
  • 52% reduction in student suspensions at one urban elementary school after 3 years of participation in the Side by Side project

Demographics

  • 25% of students have made suicidal gestures or attempts
  • 44% of students have been involved with child protective services
  • 19% of students have been in non-Wediko residential placements
  • 18% of students have experienced the loss or abandonment of both parents
  • 46% of students have experienced the loss or abandonment of one parent
  • 40% of students have a family member with identified mental health problems
  • 18% of students have been exposed to chronic family violence
  • 31% of students have documented exposure to chronic neighborhood violence
  • 35% of students have been psychiatrically hospitalized
  • 21% of students have been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • 78% of students have been identified as needing special education services
