Application Procedures for the
Summer Program
The summer residential program is open to boys
and girls, ages 7-18. Wediko has an equal opportunity admissions policy;
providing services to struggling children from diverse racial, religious,
economic and ethnic backgrounds.
The admissions process follows this sequence:
- APPLICATION - The application has
three parts: a parent form, a teacher form and (if involved) a therapist
form. A child is only considered for admission after all the forms have been
received.
- INTERVIEW - An admissions/diagnostic
interview is scheduled if the application materials indicate that Wediko
might provide an appropriate and meaningful clinical/educational experience
for the child. The purposes of the interview are several fold:
- to have a dialogue with the child and
family which describes the program, answers questions and defines mutual
expectations
- to help Wediko get a clear picture of the
clinical/educational concerns by hearing the parent's views of the child
first hand
- to have the child identify issues she/he
can commit to work on during the program.
- The interview is an essential part of the
admissions process. In some situations, such as with adolescents, a
second interview is required to gauge whether the child's motivation to
grow is serious.
- GROUP PLACEMENT - Wediko uses cabin
groups as the focus of new social/academic and personal learning. Therefore
group composition is critical. Acceptance to the program means that a child
could benefit from Wediko's offerings, a slot is available in an
age/developmental group that can match his/her needs, the family and child
are motivated to participate in the program and funding is in place.
Admissions and placement decisions are reviewed weekly by an Admissions
Committee staffed by senior clinicians and administrators. Often a child is
placed on a waiting list until it is clear that age-peers with complementary
strengths and needs are available to create a therapeutic group.
- ACCEPTANCE AND FUNDING - The final
step in the application process is funding. Wediko will admit a child into
the program only after receiving a written guarantee of funding.
The number of applicants typically exceeds
Summer Program capacity. We recommend initiating the application procedure as
early as possible.
