Besides the Summer Program, Wediko offers the Boston School-Based Program which provides community-based clinical services to children and families in the greater Boston area. Wediko provides clinical services to over 600 families whose children attend the Boston, Medford, and Chelsea Public Schools. The school based program was awarded a contract by the Boston Public Schools to run a summer school program for students who have trouble maintaining academic and behavioral gains over the summer break. Every summer about 90 students attend the program in Boston. The Boston program also provides intensive short-term group and family therapy services to youth at risk. Finally, the Wediko School was founded in 1989, and is based on Wediko's therapeutic Summer Program. The school offers boarding, day, and independent living programs for 50 boys between the ages of 6 and 21. Students who attend the school typically struggle with lagging self-control, inadequate socials skills, and poor academic achievement. Wediko integrates individualized curriculum with language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and fine arts. The Wediko School also offers social skills training, daily group meetings, individual therapy, comprehensive feedback systems, motivating incentive systems, and therapeutic horseback riding. |
Wediko Children's Services is a non-profit organization created to
help children at risk. In the nineteen thirties the late Dr.
Robert A. Young began to formulate ideas for a summer program which
would relieve troubled children from the pressures of their daily
lives, as well as provide comprehensive, growth-producing
experiences. In 1934, his concepts were realized with the
establishment of the country's first summer therapeutic treatment
camp. World War II forced the temporary closing of the setting;
however, in 1948 it was reformulated under the name Wediko. Dr.
Young's vision of a therapeutic environment broadened as he constructed
a program that directed children towards successful experiences with
peers and adults. He viewed a child's stay at Wediko as a time for
learning new social skills, as well as, correcting existing distortions
in feelings and thoughts. Wediko has steadfastly maintained Dr.
Young's commitment to children while expanding the scope of Summer
Program services. Since Dr. Young's day, the staff-to-child ratio
has increased, as has the capacity to design and implement detailed
objective-oriented treatment/educational plans. The program has
been enlarged to include a school, groups for girls, specialized groups
for adolescents and groups treating atypical, ADD, and adopted
children. Wediko's spectrum of psychological and educational
approaches encourages self-knowledge, self control and the development
of self esteem.
